Mission Description
The Challenge: Children with muscular dystrophy often spend long periods at desks for schoolwork, therapy exercises, or leisure activities. Your mission is to create an interactive desktop companion robot that acts as both a focus aid and emotional support companion.
What You'll Build: A small desktop robot (maximum 6 inches) that can:
- Engage attention: Use lights, sounds, or gentle movements to help redirect focus during tasks
- Provide companionship: Respond to touch, voice, or proximity with interactive behaviors
- Encourage activity: Prompt gentle movements, stretches, or engagement through games
- Simple construction: Built with accessible materials like Arduino, servo motors, basic sensors, and everyday craft supplies
Key Requirements:
- Must fit on a standard desk (small footprint)
- Battery powered with reasonable runtime (2+ hours)
- Rechargeable battery .
- Safe materials and smooth edges
- Interactive responses to user input (touch, sound, or movement)
- Cost-effective design (target under $50 in materials)
Research Shows:
- Pet robots can improve attention span and reduce anxiety in children
- Interactive companions help maintain focus during tasks and provide emotional support
- Children respond positively to robots that display lifelike behaviors and social interaction
- Desktop companions can reduce stress and increase engagement during sedentary activities
Design Considerations:
- How will your robot detect when a child needs encouragement?
- What interactive features will keep children engaged without being distracting?
- How can the robot support both focus and gentle physical activity?
- What materials and sensors will create the most responsive yet affordable design?
Student Goal
Design and create a small, affordable desktop pet robot using simple tools and materials that helps children with muscular dystrophy stay focused, engaged, and emotionally supported during daily activities.
