Mission Description

  • Context: Water is precious. Design an automatic irrigation system for a small garden that waters plants only when needed. This prevents overwatering and saves water – great for home gardens or agriculture.
  • Task: Set up a soil moisture sensor in a potted plant’s soil and connect it to your controller, along with a small water pump or a servo that opens a valve (you can simulate with an LED if no pump is available). Program the system to read soil moisture regularly. If the soil is dry beyond a threshold, the controller should turn on the pump to water the plant for a short period (e.g., 10 seconds) or until moisture rises. If the soil is moist enough, ensure the pump stays off. Include an indicator (like an LED or buzzer) that comes on when watering is active. Expected Output: A self-watering plant setup. When demonstrated, if you remove the sensor from wet soil or let the plant dry (simulating drought), the device detects dryness and automatically activates the pump (you might see water flow or an LED representing it). Once the soil is adequately wet, the device stops watering. This mission addresses environmental and community needs by preventing water waste and keeping plants healthy even when people forget to water them.
