Mission Description
- Real-World Problem: Water scarcity is a critical issue in the Gulf. Qatar’s domestic water use is around 450 liters per person per day, one of the highest in the world . In the UAE, utilities have detected over 1.8 million water leaks since 2019 via smart meters – evidence of wastage that a dry climate cannot afford. Both countries face the dual challenge of limited freshwater and high demand, making efficient water management vital .
- Mission Task: Design an IoT-based water monitoring system to detect leaks and optimize usage in a building or neighborhood. This could include sensor-equipped pipelines that send alerts for unusual flow or a smart irrigation controller that waters parks only as needed. Teams will prototype the sensor network and a dashboard or app for real-time alerts.
- Key Skills: IoT sensor integration, coding (for data logging and alerts), data analytics (anomaly detection), basic plumbing/robotics (for leak simulation).
- Expected Impact: A successful solution will save thousands of liters of water, preventing waste before it happens. It empowers communities to conserve water and ensures resilience against droughts. This aligns with national goals – the UAE aims to rank among the top 10 globally in water efficiency , and Qatar’s Water Management Plan 2030 prioritizes safeguarding water supply against climate risks . By tackling leaks and overuse, students contribute to a sustainable, water-secure future for their cities.
